What is Band H?
Band H is the highest band in England and Scotland, covering properties valued at over £320,000 at 1 April 1991. In Wales, Band H covers £324,001 to £424,000 (Wales has an additional Band I above it). In England and Wales, Band H households pay 18/9 - exactly double - the Band D rate. In Scotland, the 2017 reform set Band H at 882/360 of Band D (about 145% more, or 2.45x).
Typical property types in Band H: Large country houses, substantial period properties, high-value London houses, mansions, and estate properties. Only a small proportion of English properties are in Band H.
Band H in Wales
In Wales, Band H covers a different value range because Wales revalued its properties in 2003 rather than 1991. Welsh Band H applies to properties valued at £324,001 to £424,000 at 1 April 2003 prices. The same Band D multiplier (18/9) applies regardless of which nation you are in.
Wales also has an additional Band I (for properties over £424,000 at 2003 values) that does not exist in England or Scotland. See our Wales bands guide for the full Welsh band system.
How Band H Rates Are Calculated
Your Band H council tax bill is calculated by multiplying your council's Band D rate by 18/9. The Band D rate is set by your local authority each year in February or March. You cannot negotiate the fraction - it is set by central government.
Formula
Your council's Band D rate × 18/9 = Band H rate
Example: £2,392 (England average Band D) × 18/9 = £4,784.00 per year
