Privacy Policy
Plain English: what we collect, why, who else sees it, and how to opt out. The one thing worth reading closely is the postcode lookup, explained below.
Effective 12 September 2026
Who we are
CouncilTaxBands.com is operated by Digital Signet Limited, 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom. Digital Signet Limited is the data controller for this site. Contact: privacy@digitalsignet.com. This site is independent and is not affiliated with any council, the Valuation Office Agency or the Scottish Assessors.
The postcode lookup
If you use the postcode search, the postcode you type is sent to postcodes.io, a free open-data service operated by Ideal Postcodes, purely to work out which council area that postcode falls in. We send the postcode and nothing else: no name, no full address, no property reference, and nothing that identifies you. The response comes back to your browser and we do not keep a record of the postcodes searched.
A postcode on its own is not usually enough to identify a person, but it is location data, so we would rather be explicit about it than bury it. If you would prefer not to use the lookup at all, every council has its own page on this site that you can browse to directly without searching.
What else we collect
No accounts, no logins, no sign-up forms. We never ask for your address, council tax account number or payment details. Beyond the postcode lookup above, the data we process comes from two sources.
Aggregate analytics. Google Analytics 4 records your visit (page viewed, referring page, device type, approximate location by country or region, and a pseudonymous identifier) so we can see which pages are useful. IP addresses are anonymised.
Advertising cookies. On pages that show an ad, our advertising partners may set cookies or read advertising identifiers in order to select and measure those ads.
How this site is funded, and your choices
This site is free to read and is supported by display advertising. Ads are served by Journey by Mediavine (operated by Mediavine, Inc.) together with a network of authorised third-party advertising partners. The current partner list is published at mediavine.com/ad-partners and mirrored in this site's ads.txt file. Those partners use cookies, mobile advertising identifiers and similar technologies to select, deliver and measure ads, including ads tailored to your interests based on your activity across different websites and apps ("interest-based advertising"). Postcodes you search are not passed to any advertising partner.
UK and EU visitors. Our advertising partners rely on your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), collected through Mediavine's Consent Management Platform, the banner shown on your first visit. You can change or withdraw consent at any time through that banner, or by clearing this site's cookies.
US visitors. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended (CCPA/CPRA) and similar state laws, interest-based advertising can count as a "sale" or "share" of personal information. You can opt out using the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" control in the cookie banner, by turning on the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser, by opting out at optout.aboutads.info, or by emailing privacy@digitalsignet.com. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
Providers, retention and your rights
Providers processing data on our behalf or receiving it as described above: Cloudflare (DNS, security and hosting), Google Analytics (aggregate statistics), Mediavine (advertising), and Ideal Postcodes / postcodes.io (postcode to council lookup). Some process data in the United States and other countries; where UK or EU law applies to a transfer we rely on safeguards such as adequacy arrangements or standard contractual clauses.
We hold no personal data of our own. Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months and then aggregated or deleted. Under UK GDPR you have the right to ask for a copy of the data we hold about you (access), correct it (rectification), delete it (erasure), limit what we do with it (restriction), object to our processing, stop it being sold or shared for targeted advertising, and withdraw consent at any time. Email privacy@digitalsignet.com and we will act within one month. You can also complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk.
Children and changes
This site is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If we change this policy we will post the new version on this page with a new effective date.
